Lisa Nordstrom mixed media artist
Lisa Nordstrom is known for her sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical mixed media constructions that often tell stories, reflect on the human condition and relay the wonders and worries of life's situations. Her work is influenced by tales, myths, humor, human nature and personal journeys, as well as quotes and snippets she's gathered along her way.
Born in Chicago, Lisa grew up "making stuff". What she made would vary with her age and ability, but she always had a project of some sort, mostly working with common and found objects to create something else entirely. High School art classes fueled her passion to create. She attended Ray- Vogue School of Design before transferring to Columbia College to study film-making.
While working in the post production industry for over 15 years, she never stopped creating. But she did come to realize that she longed to devote more time to her hands-on, tactile creations; and once again working with common, found and sought after objects. After receiving an award at her first juried art fair in 1998, her career as a full time artist began.
Most of Lisa's work is in the collage/assemblage genre--what she's come to call "gatherings"--with many pieces in private collections. She has exhibited at numerous art fairs and several galleries in the Chicago area and is a member of the Chicago Artists' Coalition, the American Craft Council, the Oak Park Area Arts Council and is the owner of Art Gecko in the Oak Park Arts District.
Artist's Statement
I am convinced that our lives are shaped, not only by the few cataclysmic events that inevitably occur during a lifetime, but quite profoundly by the collective moments of our everyday, often mundane, life experiences. It is over the course of time that we gather the memories and pieces; the moments of comfort, pleasure, pain, loss, love, longing, sorrow and joy that truly make up our existence.
It is in the spirit of gathering these separate pieces and bringing them together to form a whole that I create my art
